Plastic Cap/Lid Collection
Watertown has recently partnered with Plastic Recycled, a local plastic recycling company that takes single use plastic and creates 100% recycled plastic furniture.
Utilizing recycled plastic for new products creates demand for recycled plastic and reduces the need to create new plastic. The DPW is currently housing a collection bin for all single use plastic lids and caps. Once the City has collected 500 pounds, we will receive a bench made of the recycled plastic.
Smaller plastic pieces, such as lids and caps can get lost in the sorting machines that are used for single stream recycling--so this is a great way of tracking where plastic is going and ensuring that it gets recycled locally. All caps and lids must be clean and dry before they are put into the collection bin. Our new collection bin is an example of what furniture made out of recycled plastic can look like! Come by 124 Orchard Street to see examples of the kinds of caps/lids we are collecting.
