The Conservation Office is responsible for: 

  • Wetland protection and permitting
  • Managing Whitney Hill Park and oversee Arsenal Park
  • Serving as a general resource for natural resource management including open space, native and invasive species, climate adaptation, etc.

Wetland Protection & Permitting

The Conservation Commission reviews wetland applications and issues permits for any land-disturbing activities in or near streams, floodplains, and wetlands. Learn more about filing a wetlands permit.

The Conservation Commission is a 7-member volunteer board appointed by the City Council. City staff in the Conservation Office support the Commission. Link to more on the Conservation Commission webpage.

Conservation Areas

Watertown has numerous ecologically diverse parcels of open space available for walking, bird-watching, and other passive recreational activities. The Conservation Office manages Whitney Hill Park and oversees Arsenal Park. Learn more about Whitney Hill Park.

Planning for the Future

Conservation Staff are involved in wide-ranging green efforts such as open space, native and invasive species education, stormwater and floodplain management, and climate resiliency.
